Tactile book cover idea - layers upon layers…

Palimpsest

Inspired by BBC Front Row Get Creative's Edmund de Waal's challenge on 28th January https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p095cwff I tried it as I might try this technique with the group I'm currently working with online. They are Mental Health Matters, based in Cardiff. I'm working with a fantastic team of volunteers and a Wellbeing Co-ordinator that truly understands creative processes. I made this video as a bit of inspiration for the staff.

We're making a concertina style book together and during next week's session are going to decorate the front cover. We may not use white paint as per this video because some of the patients have vision impairments and need high contrast graphics. There are ways round this - by adding contrasting colour paints such as orange and blue.

I think this is a great tactile process because it can be added to bit by bit. In my mind, it's a 'no-fail' activity. If you don't like a layer, just scrape it off and try again.
