Together We Can - Melin Homes

A collaboration between Melin Homes residents, pupils and support workers from Crownbridge School.

Together We Can

The lockdown has demonstrated that creative activity in all its forms is providing solace and daily purpose that supports mental and physical health during very uncertain times.

During the first lockdown (April - August 2020), there was an open call out inviting participants to send in artwork that they had made with the theme “What makes you happy?” The artwork was varied and wide ranging – from detailed pencil drawings to painting, photography and collage.
Jordan Sallis (msblackink on Instagram) drew a black and white charcoal drawing each day inspired by nature, creating 60 individual artworks.
A selection of her work is included in the exhibition.

Origami installation

The process…

I was invited to curate participants’ artwork into an installation, choosing origami as the medium to bring everyone together. Individual pattern repeats were carefully designed so that the artwork is visible when folded.

As lockdown restrictions were still in place in October 2020, Webber Design Ltd created a film of the exhibition at Barnabas Arts House, Newport to showcase the wonderful artwork made. There are plans to install the exhibition in the windows of residencies when restrictions are lifted.

“Since I had an accident, I’m now left with a medical condition. Doing art helps - not just with my mood but also with my pain levels. I started to paint during lockdown. It makes me happy” - Karen, participant
