The Queen’s Green Canopy (II)
At last, as restrictions eased in 2022, and Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations were underway, I was able to continue the delivery of the long-awaited Queen’s Green Canopy project, working with the well-being team at St. David’s Hospital, Cardiff.
I delivered 8 sessions, online and in-person, including 3 extra sessions for the staff (without patients). These sessions enabled the team to build their confidence in leading specific art processes. We began by looking at nature-themed art and words in response.
“You’ve managed to get parts of my rusty old brain working again!”

Playful experiments
The workshops generated ideas for artwork and source images. The next part of the process is also exciting because it’s playful and experimental. Each project delivers a unique set of outcomes that can never be predicted.
Back in the studio, I blended the paintings into digital composites - creating large-scale artworks that will be digitally printed onto vinyl, for display within the hospital.
“I see a lake, with the sun shining through. There are mountains with a bit of snow on them…I can see trees…
It could be called Tranquil Sunlight.”
— Amy

Techniques and processes
We explored writing in plaster, and adding colour to it after playing with inks. In later sessions, we combined painting with lighting it with paper LEDs.
“You’ve inspired us to deliver these processes on different wards and even with our children at home!” - Gabe
