Unwrapping the Cotton Wool

'Unwrapping The Cotton Wool' is all about parents who are carers for their children with additional needs. The project offers parents space away from commitments and challenges to explore arts & creativity. The Place’s ‘Green Room’ offers a sanctuary and provides creative space.

It was a privilege for me to hold the space and open discussion and a series of gentle, creative writing sessions which led to exploring colour and mark-making.
We used a variety of paints and collage techniques to create folding books and individual artworks.

”I’ve really enjoyed the time and space just for me. Initially, I wasn’t sure as I wouldn’t say that I’m creative in any way - but I kept an open mind, kept showing up, and then I got right into it!”

Unwrapping the Cotton Wool is around the theme of allowing themselves & their children space to explore as often parents of children with needs struggle to let go.

It ran for 5 two-hour sessions with mothers of disabled children and also 2 sessions with young people with autism and disabilities.
This is a partnership with The Place, Newport and Newport City Council.
